COISUG: Upcoming Meetings – Green Data Centers and Desktop Virtualization

Friday, July 16th, 2010
This is a repost of this COISUG article

Time to kick it up into high gear – we have 2 meetings lined up for August and September, and a couple in the planning stages for October/November.

The first meeting will be Thursday August 12th and split across two topics – Bend Broadband’s new Green Data center (Part 1) and new developments in the Open Source Arena (Part 2). Bend Broadband will have their Data Center consultant present to talk about the DC and to field questions – design, build and what makes a green data center. In Part 2, Mark Turner will be presenting on some new developments in the Open Source arena. This is a new “special topics” format to be hosted at TechSpace Bend.

Date:August 12 (Thursday)
Topic: Part 1: Enterprise-Class Green “Vault” Data Centers (Bend Broadband) – Part 2: Open Source Developments
Location: TechSpace Bend (906 Harriman – Old Cigar Building – Across from Blacksmith)
Time: 4pm

Results are in! The second meeting is on Desktop Virtualization and hosted by Structured. Structured is on top of their game in Desktop Virtualization and will have an expert onsite to dig deep into this topic. This will be the traditional format hosted at McMenamins Old St. Francais School, Rambler Room – lunch, giveaways etc.

Date: September 10th
Topic:Desktop Virtualization
Location: McMenamins Old St. Francais School, Rambler Room
Time: 1pm
- Lunch and giveaways

The October meeting is still in the planning stages – look for a topic survey soon.

Spread the word!

Thanks,
Lewis Howell

PBJ Fastest GrowingG5 is still growing. And growing. And growing…

The Portland Business Journal has recently announced that we’re the 3rd fastest-growing private company in Oregon/Southwest Washington. With revenue growth of 413.47% and employee count increase of 390%, we shouldn’t be too surprised. See our press release for all the details.

We know, of course, that we’re growing because we’re helping our clients grow their business. Their success is our success. Team G5 is committed to staying at the top of the list – year after year.

Taus and KernWell it must have been a slow news day in Bend, because the Bulletin came through on their threat and actually published a piece on CodeBenders. Thanks to David Holley for letting us rant about everything but technology and writing a nice piece that covers a lot of ground.

TechSpaceBend: “Co-working spaces thrive”

Thursday, June 17th, 2010
This is a repost of this TechSpaceBend article

“Co-Work Spaces Thrive” talks about the SF co-working scene, although the company they highlight, i/o ventures, is more an incubator than a co-work space (to my mind anyway):

After receiving 300 applications, they accepted their first five startups. The incubator will also rent spaces and have a café, a company representative said.

Regardless, i’s always fun learning about new projects like this.  Every one takes a different approach and I nearly always find them humbling reads. TechSpaceBend is still one of the smallest undertakings I’ve seen. But we’ve got a great vibe going and it’s a ton of fun (still!)  I’m also very proud of our model – completely non-profit, and still the most affordable by a long shot.  Our $150/month price point for desks is typically 1/2 to 1/3rd what is being charged elsewhere.
